Kate Waterhouse urges progress on brain cancer

Survival rates from brain cancer have not budged in two decades and it's time medical science made some headway, says Australian racing identity and columnist Kate Waterhouse.

Ms Waterhouse has been named as the public face of Brain Cancer Research Advocates, a new national fundraising and advocacy group that will target the most under-studied of all cancers.

About 1,400 Australians contract brain cancer and 1,000 people die from it every year.

Afu set to put in the hard yards for Falcons

SURROUNDED by bigger-draw signings, Josh Afu is ready to make a name for himself at Kingston Park.

The Tongan international, who is hardened to English rugby – and the winters – after a year at Doncaster, is relishing pre-season training at the Falcons.

Aware he is not top of the bill in Steve Bates’ squad, he is quite happy to put in the hard yards and prove himself over the coming campaign.

Surprised when talk of Newcastle’s interest first came to his attention, Afu said he worried he had blown his chance.

But after impressing the coaches he secured his move – and now he wants to repay their faith at the first opportunity.
